About Ocean Mind

Ocean Mind runs evidence-informed surf therapy programs across Greater Geelong, the Surf Coast, and the Mornington Peninsula.

We support young people navigating mental health challenges, isolation, and disabilities by pairing them 1-on-1 with trained local mentors. Together, they take on the ocean, build real confidence, and form lasting connections in their community.

More Than Surfing

Surfing is the setting, but the real work happens on the beach and in the water.

Every session gives young people a safe, low-pressure space to move at their own pace. Guided by staff and volunteer mentors, participants develop practical skills that carry into everyday life:

  • Managing stress: Learning tools to handle challenge and pressure.

  • Building confidence: Trying new things and backing themselves.

  • Creating connection: Feeling seen, supported, and accepted by peers and mentors.

Long-Term Support

Support doesn't end when a 6-week program finishes. Through our fortnightly Surf Club, volunteer pathways, and community events, we make sure young people have an ongoing space to stay connected and keep getting out in the water.

Driven by Evidence & Experience

Ocean Mind’s programs are grounded in research across outdoor healthcare, youth mentoring, and positive youth development. Delivered by trained staff and volunteer mentors, our work follows a structured four-phase pathway designed to support long-term growth:

  • Safety & Connection: Building 1-on-1 trust with a mentor in a low-pressure environment.

  • Skill & Challenge: Using surf instruction to build problem-solving and emotional regulation under stress.

  • Agency & Independence: Supporting young people to take ownership of their choices and progress.

  • Community Connection: Linking participants into ongoing spaces like our fortnightly Surf Club.

We continually measure our delivery using feedback from participants, families, and referral partners to ensure our programs stay safe, practical, and effective.
